Mortal Kombat 2 2026 Review (Spoiler-Free)

Mortal Kombat 2 arrived in theaters today, and I have to say—it absolutely delivered. I walked in with tempered expectations, especially after being disappointed by the 2021 Mortal Kombat film. That first movie struggled with its narrative and made the questionable choice to center Cole Young as the protagonist, which ultimately weakened the overall experience.

This time around, Johnny Cage takes the lead role—a significant improvement over Cole Young. While Liu Kang would have been an even stronger choice, the shift still elevates the film considerably. The story in Mortal Kombat 2 is dramatically better and genuinely captures the essence of the game itself. The environments and locations feel authentically pulled from the source material and translated to the big screen with impressive detail.

The fight choreography is exceptional from beginning to end, delivering the gory and visceral combat fans crave. The one element missing is the signature X-ray bone-breaking sequences from the games—but you can't have everything. It would have been fantastic to see Goro featured in this installment instead of the first film, where the character felt underutilized. What's clear is that the filmmakers genuinely listened to fan feedback and learned from the missteps of the first movie, applying those lessons to create a far superior sequel.

Overall, I genuinely loved this movie. I've played every game, watched all the films, TV series, and animated features—including Mortal Kombat Legacy on YouTube. I'm a longtime fan of the original 1995 film despite its flaws, and this sequel stands as a fantastic addition to the franchise that truly delivers for MK enthusiasts. As a devoted fan myself, I wholeheartedly recommend seeing this film. You won't be disappointed.
